What is Ketamine HCL injection and how is it used?
Ketamine Hydrochloride is a prescription medicine used as a sedative for diagnostic and surgical procedures. It may be used alone or with other medications.
Ketamine Hydrochloride belongs to a class of drugs called General Anesthetics, Systemic.
It is not known if Ketamine HCL injection is safe and effective in children younger than 16 years of age.
What are the possible side effects of Ketamine HCL injection?
Ketamine Hydrochloride may cause serious side effects including:
- severe confusion,
- hallucinations,
- unusual thoughts,
- extreme fear,
- painful or difficult urination,
- increased urination,
- loss of bladder control,
- blood in your urine,
- lightheadedness,
- slow heart rate,
- weak or shallow breathing, and
- jerky movements that may look like convulsions
Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.
The most common side effects of Ketamine Hydrochloride include:
- dream-like feeling,
- blurred vision,
- double vision,
- dizziness,
- drowsiness,
- nausea,
- vomiting,
- loss of appetite, and
- sleep problems (insomnia)

Ketamine hydrochloride is a nonbarbiturate anesthetic chemically designated dl 2-(0-chlorophenyl)-2- (methylamino) cyclohexanone hydrochloride. It is formulated as a slightly acid (pH 3.5-5.5) sterile solution for intravenous or intramuscular injection in concentrations containing the equivalent of either 10, 50 or 100 mg ketamine base per milliliter and contains not more than 0.1 mg/mL Phemerol® (benzethonium chloride) added as a preservative. The 10 mg/mL solution has been made isotonic with sodium chloride.
INDICATIONS
Hydrochloride injection is indicated as the sole anesthetic agent for diagnostic and surgical procedures that do not require skeletal muscle relaxation. Ketamine hydrochloride is best suited for short procedures but it can be used, with additional doses, for longer procedures.
This medication is indicated for the induction of anesthesia prior to the administration of other general anesthetic agents.
Ketamine hydrochloride injection is indicated to supplement low-potency agents, such as nitrous oxide.
