Flunitrazepam is marketed by Roche under the trade name Rohypnol. It is a powerful hypnotic drug that is a benzodiazepine derivative. It has powerful hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, and skeletal muscle relaxant properties.
Flunitrazepam is commonly prescribed for the treatment of insomnia. Insomnia can be described as difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakening, early awakening, or a combination of both. Flunitrazepam is a short-intermediate-acting benzodiazepine and is sometimes used in patients who have difficulty in maintaining sleep. Intermediate half-life benzodiazepines are also useful for patients with difficulty in maintaining sleep eg loprazolam, lormetazepam, temazepam and may be preferable to long half-life benzodiazepines which typically cause next-day sedation and impairments. Hypnotics should only be used on a short-term basis or in those with chronic insomnia on an occasional basis.
The drug is sometimes used as a date rape drug (commonly referred to in street slang as a “roofie”)
Can Rohypnol cause addiction?
When Rohypnol is used repeatedly, it can cause physical dependence and the onset of a withdrawal syndrome after stopping use.
Rohypnol reduces cognitive and psychomotor abilities, which have an impact on reaction times and driving ability. The use of this medicine in conjunction with alcohol raises specific safety concerns because both depressants of the central nervous system would increase the toxicity of one another. Because to needle-sharing, injecting any illegal substance puts the user at risk for acquiring the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B and C, and other blood-borne infections.
Rohypnol withdrawal is a possibility, just like with other benzodiazepines. Long-term use may cause seizures, behavioral problems, anxiety, and insomnia. Some adverse reactions, such as insomnia, may occur after only a few days of use.
What does Rohypnol look like?
In the US, rohypnol is no longer legally available.
Rohypnol is now formulated in an oblong caplet that is light green with a blue center rather than the prior white tablet that disintegrated without color, taste, or smell. The manufacturer implemented this adjustment to make it easier to spot tainted drinks in bars. The blue core will turn transparent liquids blue when dissolved in them. Unfortunately, the blue dye could not be visible when dissolved in liquids with a deeper hue. Perhaps absent from generic versions of Rohypnol is the blue coloring.
